STARS AND STRIPES - National
flag of the United States of America.
On June 14, 1777 the U.S. Continental Congress adopted the Stars
and Stripes pattern for the national flag. This act followed the
Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) .
The U.S. Flag has ,thirteen horizontal stripes, alternating red
and white, each stripe representing one of the 13 original
colonies of England, and 50 stars, one for each state of the
Union. The last star added was for the State of Hawaii, 1960. The
U.S. flag is frequently called "Old Glory", and "Stars
and Stripes".
