GHETTO - (geto or
foundry). Originally the area of a city or town where Jews were
forced to live by law.
The term was first used in 1516 when the Jews of Venice were
expelled to an island within the city which contained an iron
foundrey.
Ghotto's were abolished in the 19th century but were revived by
the Germans and Italians between 1940 and 1945.
