BARCLAYS PLC is a UK-based financial services group engaged primarily in the banking and investment banking businesses. Barclays is one of the biggest financial services groups in the United Kingdom. The Group also operates in many other countries around the world. Barclays has been involved in banking in the UK for over 300 years and as at 30th June 1999 operated in over 60 countries world-wide, including all the major financial centres. Group staff numbers world-wide, at 30th June 1999, were 77,400, of which 57,800 were in the UK.
